Matt shot some MLS, and a rodeo in Southern California that didn’t offer the usual variety of shooting positions. Ryu kicked off his futbol season with some portraits and decided that he needs to get much better at it.
Ryu and Matt talk about the “Not in the Centre” themed competition and the importance of thinking beyond the basic rules of photography.
In Training Ground we critique pictures from listeners who bravely ask for it in our Flickr group.
Our August 2012 themed competition was “Not in the Centre”

Really enjoyed this Master Class and totally understand where I went wrong in You Win.
A kick in the pants is always better than a pat on the back, thanks again guys.
Ok Guys, I live in Rio and I really prefer to shoot on the beach despite the sun and sand evil combo! Access to the beach tends to be easier than indoor events and soccer/football here in Brazil is just overcrowded with photogs.
Thanks for the critique, the surf photo was in fact a really creepy situation, so I’m glad you reacted that way. The out of focus photo was taken after 12 hours shooting the footvolley contest, so I got bored and decide to experiment a bit…
We all need a kick in the pants from time to time. Since we take extreme pleasure in belittling other people, I take it as a compliment. But myself, I like to be hold and cuddled and told that I’m the best. <- softy.
All I have to say is that we are extremely envious of your situation even though you can't get into any football matches. It's not a bad consolation prize to be able to sped a lot of time on the beach. Please keep on experimenting and the hand was really creepy… :)
